Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Golf, manages and supervises the day-to-day operation of the City of St. George municipal golf course to ensure quality service is provided to the public and that work is in compliance with City policies and procedures and all federal, state and local laws.

Essential Functions

1. Manages the day-to-day operation of municipal golf course pro shop operations, including reserving and scheduling course play; receiving revenues; renting motorized carts; and coordinating activities of the driving range, practice areas and related facilities.

2. Serves as business administrator for assigned course.

a. Develops and monitors revenue and expense budgets and controls associated with financial operations in the pro shop.

b. Deposits all cash receipts and submits required financial information to City Treasurer’s Office.

c. Completes and submits required financial and facility usage reports to Director of Golf.

d. Sets objectives for, and develops plans within budget, to achieve golf revenue targets. Monitors the revenue performance of the golf course(s) throughout the year.

3. Manages budget, expense control, maintenance, and cleanliness of the entire clubhouse and related facilities including pro shop, offices, restrooms, lobby, practice/lesson facilities, food concession areas, patios, cart staging, storage, and maintenance areas. Oversees security of the entire clubhouse.

4. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, hires and trains staff on policies, procedures and job duties. Conducts, at least annually, written review and feedback on performance of all City employees under their supervision. Prepares and executes training sessions for personnel on policies, procedures, job duties, and customer service.

5. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, schedules personnel to provide appropriate coverage of golf course responsibilities. Manages staffing for pro shop, reservations, collection of fees, starting of play, driving range, cart

issuance and return, cart maintenance and repair, miscellaneous guest services, and pace of play functions to ensure customer service levels in line with City standards. Including food and beverage services, golf instruction and pro shop merchandise.

6. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, plans, announces, coordinates, and provides staffing for programs and events including City-sponsored tournaments and clinics, men’s and ladies’ association activities, junior golf programs, private group outings, and other special events. Plans, organizes, and coordinates to ensure facility’s fiscal viability and to accommodate public needs including pro shop merchandise and food & beverage requirements.

7. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, manages tee time reservation and point of sale computer hardware and software, and ensures that system is properly utilized to provide appropriate customer service levels, and accounting, marketing, and facility usage information.

8. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, ensures that operation of golf course, club house, pro shop, and food concession hours of operation are in-line with City policy and accommodate public needs; and that the facility and daily work procedures meet health, cleanliness, and safety standards.

9. Manages golf rental equipment and ensures public usage of this equipment in line with City policies and procedures:

a. Supervises rental of golf equipment including rental clubs, golf carts, pull carts, and range balls.

b. Ensures golf carts are kept clean and charged/fueled, tires are in good condition and at proper pressure, and that carts are mechanically sound and safe to operate.

c. Keeps accurate records of each golf cart rental fee received, and requires completion by customer of the Daily Cart Rental Agreement provided by the City.

d. Enforce and maintain the preventative maintenance and repair of range equipment and vehicles.

e. Fills range ball machine(s) or ball bin(s) picks up balls, baskets, and changes hitting locations and applies sand and seed as needed.

f. Ensures range ball equipment and pick-up equipment are clean and operational.

g. Maintains clean and litter-free driving range, practice area, and related facilities.

10. Supervises course marshals in monitoring pace of play in accordance with course standards, and to regulate play and the conduct of players to prevent injury and unnecessary damage to the course.

11. Under the direction of the Director of Golf, markets and promotes all products, programs, services, and events held at City golf courses, and is proactive in recommending and implementing new golf products, programs, services, and events. Responds quickly to changing market conditions and revises strategy accordingly.

12. Maintains the teamwork and communication necessary with Golf Course Superintendents and other management staff to assure maintenance of golf course conditions and the marking of the golf course are in accordance with the USGA rules.

13. Cooperates with the Utah Golf Association in establishing and monitoring handicaps for interested players.

14. The Head Golf Professional will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating the Junior Association of Golfers (JAG) tournaments at the golf facility, ensuring organization and quality of events that engage and inspire young golfers.

15. The role includes providing junior golf instruction during the summer JAG program, focusing on nurturing skills, promoting enjoyment of the sport, and fostering a supportive learning environment for all junior golf participants.

16. Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing the Golf Genius Tournament software to efficiently manage scoring and handle tournament payouts, ensuring accuracy and seamless tournament operations.

17. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity. Ability to work long and varied hours. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. Intermittent exposure to hot and cold temperatures while completing outdoor tasks.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience

Five years experience as a PGA Head Golf Professional or PGA First Assistant.

Licenses or Certification:

PGA Class “A” professional in good standing.

Possession of a valid Utah driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Public relations for recreation organizations.

• Teach golf lessons and communicate golfing techniques such as grip, setup, posture, swing, etc.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain effective working relations with elected officials, department heads, employees, the public, officials and employees of other jurisdictions.
