Position Summary
Operates City of St. George transit vehicles of various sizes in a safe manner over assigned routes according to established time schedules, while maintaining order in the vehicle and providing courteous service.

SunTran Transit Operator I
1. Operates transit buses of various sizes over assigned routes in accordance with specific manifest instructions, and provides safe, secure, and comfortable services to users of the transit system in accordance with division standard operating procedures. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
a. Collects appropriate customer fares, ensures the comfort of passengers, maintains order among customers, and handles volatile situations according to standard operating procedures.
b. Promotes positive passenger relations by announcing bus stops, assisting customers with fare and routing information, explaining established passenger policies and procedures, providing directions to customers, and communicating with special needs customers according to parameters.
c. Files special incident reports, completes daily reports, performs daily inspections of vehicles, reports any vehicle operational or maintenance problems to the dispatcher or supervisor in a timely manner, and completes other reports as required.
d. Assures that transit vehicles are operated in accordance with established customer schedules.
e. Operates a two-way radio in a safe manner.
2. Cooperates with the investigation of any customer complaints.
3. Attends and successfully completes all transit training as scheduled by the supervisor.
4. Assists with the collection of data for the planning/scheduling of transit services.
5. Assists with conducting outreach activities of the division.
6. Assists with vehicle cleaning and daily maintenance of interior and exterior of bus.
7. May be assigned to assist with other activities needed to run the division such as clerical tasks, answering telephones, etc.
8. Performs other related duties as required.
SunTran Transit Operator II
1. Operates transit buses of various sizes over assigned routes in accordance with specific manifest instructions, and provides safe, secure, and comfortable services to users of the transit system in accordance with division standard operating procedures. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
2. Performs daily pre-inspection and post-inspection of buses in order to ensure maximum safety in operation of the vehicle, communicates both verbally and in writing about safety concerns to supervisor and the fleet maintenance department.
3. Collects appropriate customer fares, ensures the comfort of passengers, maintains order among customers, and handles volatile situations according to standard operating procedures.
4. Promotes positive passenger relations by announcing bus stops, assisting customers with fare and routing information, explaining established passenger policies and procedures, providing directions to customers, and communicating with special needs customers according to parameters.
5. Files special incident reports, completes daily reports, and completes other reports as required.

14. May be assigned to assist with other activities needed to run the division such as clerical tasks, answering telephones, etc.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Constant exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. This position functions within a transit vehicle and in a transit operations environment. The Operator is required to get in and out of the driver’s seat frequently and to exit the vehicle to ensure safe operations and to assist passengers. There are periods of extended sitting, exposure to weather conditions, frequent noise, fumes, odors, and dusts. The job involves bending/stooping, crouching, kneeling, and frequent reaching above shoulder and climbing into and out of a bus, and frequent pass punching and fine motor skills associated with bus operations and fare collections. Must be able to push or pull up to 40 lbs. to exert pressure on straps to secure wheel chairs and other
mobility devices and have the ability to lift and carry up to five pounds for brochures and cushions; and push/pull up to 10 pounds to operate the steering wheel, door, and gear shift constantly throughout the day. Employees in this classification will be asked to fill in additional shifts as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications
SunTran Transit Operator I
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Directly related experience may substitute for education.
Experience: Previous experience driving public transit vehicles is preferred.
Career Progression:
Transit Operator I is eligible for promotion to Transit Operator II after one (1) year of full-time continuous transit operator experience and required training, TAPTCO training or equivalent. TAPTCO training, or approved equal, may be substituted by transit training obtained while employed by other transit entities.
• Public transit experience from other transit agencies receives 1 to 1 comparable experience. Other comparable work experience directly related to transit (e.g. Airport shuttle experience where stops, times, passengers entering/leaving, etc.)
• School bus experience receives 0.5 to 1 comparable experience.
• Coach and/or shuttle driving (e.g. hotel shuttle, assisted living transportation, etc.) experience receives
0.25 to 1 comparable experience.
• Semi-truck/delivery driving experience will not receive comparable experience.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
• Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with passenger endorsement.
• CPR and First Aid certified desired.
• Possess a current DOT Medical Card.
SunTran Transit Operator II
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Directly related experience may substitute for education.
Experience:
Must be 21 years of age.
Transit operator experience of one (1) year or more.
Career Progression:
Transit Operator I is eligible for promotion to Transit Operator II after one (1) year of full-time continuous transit operator experience and required training, TAPTCO training or equivalent. TAPTCO training, or approved equal, may be substituted by transit training obtained while employed by other transit entities.

SunTran Transit Operator III
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Directly related experience may substitute for education.
Experience:
• Must be 21 years of age.
• Transit operator experience of two (2) years or more.
Career Progression:
Transit Operator I is eligible for promotion to Transit Operator II after one (1) year of full-time continuous transit operator experience and required training, TAPTCO training or equivalent. TAPTCO training, or approved equal, may be substituted by transit training obtained while employed by other transit entities.

• Successfully read map and schedule information.
• Communicate orally or in writing.
• Basic reading, writing, and spoken language ability.
• Basic math with ability to determine correct fare and make change.
• Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to see for the purpose of operating a vehicle during day and night time conditions, reading, and observing passengers.

SunTran Transit Operator II

• Read and write English and interpret traffic signs, maps, schedules and posted memos
• Respond professionally to passenger requests or questions, and all two-way radio communications
• Perform under a variety of pressures and deal with distractions while driving
• Take direction from assigned supervisor
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to see for the purpose of operating a vehicle during day and night time conditions, reading, and observing passengers.
• Work day or evening shifts, weekends, holidays and other shifts of varying hours as assigned
SunTran Transit Operator III
Knowledge of:
• City and state traffic regulations, signs, signals, and safety procedures.
• Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) and Automated Voice Announcement (AVA) systems and able to train other Transit Operators in how to operate the systems properly.
• All routes and time points for the purpose of proof-reading passenger count sheets, maps, and schedules.
• Laws, DOT Safety Regulations and policies governing the safe transport of passengers, and ability to teach/communicate/incorporate these laws in a training setting.
Skills:
• Excellent interpersonal skills necessary when interacting with customers.
• Must be able to react quickly to situations that could create safety and customer security problems.
Ability to:
• Pass mandatory and random drug screening
• Read and write English and interpret traffic signs, maps, schedules and posted memos
• Respond professionally to passenger requests or questions, and all two-way radio communications
• Perform under a variety of pressures and deal with distractions while driving
