Job Description

Position Summary

Under the close supervision of the Landscape Architects on City of St. George staff, assists with a variety of design and production work required to implement the design and development of parks, recreational facilities, trails, and streetscapes.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1. Operates computer-aided drafting (CAD) design software to produce designs and documents that may include site grading, planting, irrigation, and other landscape arrangements.

2. Conducts site visits to compile measurements as necessary. Assists in the preparation of site inventories and analysis. Basic familiarity with Geographic Information System applications.

3. Draws rough and detailed maps, charts, sketches, and drawings based on preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets, and other data. Draws prototypes, plans, or maps, to scale.

4. Confers with City Landscape Architects and Park Planners to establish and evaluate design concepts for City parks, recreational facilities, trails, and streetscapes.

5. Performs other related work and duties as required and directed.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Work is conducted in both an office environment and an outdoor setting that requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and driving. The position requires moderate physical activity which may include pushing, pulling or lifting up to 50 pounds. The position requires self-motivation, initiative, and confidence. Moderate exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and established deadlines. Must be able to work in extreme hot or cold weather and desert climatic conditions. The position requires an individual to work in extremely rough construction areas and climbing in and out of construction areas. Exposure to confined spaces; hazardous materials such as fumes, liquids, asphalt, etc.; working around heavy equipment machinery noise, blasting areas, deep trenches, pipes under high pressure; and occasionally exposed to pathogenic bacteria and noxious gases while on construction sites may be required.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Course work in college level landscape architecture program or related field, demonstrating entry level knowledge and understanding of landscape design and landscape architectural drafting.

Licenses and/or Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Computer-aided design and drafting techniques for landscape architectural drafting (as opposed to mechanical drafting).

• Computer graphics design software including Adobe Photoshop, Sketch-up, or similar.

• Basic principles and practices of landscape architecture.

• Design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, drawings, and models.

• Plants, materials, and environmental requirements of the Southwestern Region.

• Materials, methods, and tools involved in landscape architecture

• Landscape architectural drafting standards and mathematics.

• Basic familiarity with capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

• Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions applicable to work activities.

Skills in:

• Drafting, drawing, and hand sketching.

• Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

• Reading, writing, and communicating at a professional level in English.

• Thinking creatively.

• Organizing, planning, and prioritizing work.

Ability to:

• Perform detailed work neatly, accurately, and in a timely fashion.

• Use office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, and scanners.

• Operate Basic Computer Programs needed to complete assignments utilizing Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Read, blueprints, schematic, and technical drawings.

• Read and understand site, grading, planting, irrigation and other plans related to property development.

• Assist in the preparation of presentation plans for City staff, administration, and the public.

• Prioritize work assignments and self-direct work tasks around the City without constant supervision.

• Work under pressure of established and unforeseen deadlines.

• Visit various construction and work site locations.

• Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other employees, and the general public.
